1. Generic Skill:
As a university student, I have developed strong interpersonal skills that can be transferred to the workplace. Through class discussion, group tasks and assessments, I learnt the ability to listen, interpret ideas, conduct research and communicate both verbally and in written forms. Undertaking my degree and my experience in both unpaid and paid work, I can effectively manage my time so that I am to perform my duties as an employee and complete my obligation as a university student. I believe that these skills learnt are essential aspect within the workplace.
2. Specialised Skill:
My experience in volunteering for the PCYC and soon to be graduate in criminology has allowed to put theory into practice and gain real-life experience. This has built the foundation needed to perform my desired role in working with juvenile offenders. It has assisted me in understanding the complex needs that arise amongst juveniles, the legal framework in which to conduct my practice and effectively help rehabilitate juveniles through restorative justice measures. Therefore, having the ability to analyse trends critically, formulate ideas and assist in reducing criminal behaviour and recidivism within contemporary society.
3. Community Funding application development
My ability to identify and research initiatives have allowed me to gain the capacity to develop fundamental skills in exploring community needs. Developing these skills has allowed me to adapt to societal changes so that I am able to highlight patterns, trends and gaps within the communities. With this, I will be to design a program that better target specific community needs and provide appropriate solutions. Identifying both non-governmental and governmental funding agencies occurs at all levels of government. With state government or local council, it’s essential to provide an evidence-based understanding so that resource can be allocated to improve gaps within the community and sustain longevity. Specific to my initiative, the government of health and department of social service all provide resources and documents outlining corporate plans, budget forecasting, strategy report that allows gaining knowledge and familiarity with their frameworks, ideas and values.
4. Applied debating: Developing position paper
My theoretical and practical understanding of applied debated initiated when I partook in applying myself to the specific methods and approaches outlined in conducting a position paper. I familiarised myself with the topic by applying myself to a wide range of literature surrounding both sides of the chosen topic. I used my research ability to effective narrow down the information to develop and outlined my position paper. Utilising this information and skill set I have gained has allowed me to properly articulate a well-structured and cohesive position paper.
